An Aspiring Reporter

Monday, April 25, 2005

“As an aspiring reporter”, that was what I wrote on my cover letter to Channel News Asia, Monday Afternoon, around 4.30 pm. And then, suddenly the news broke. Ersa Siregar, died with a bullet on his neck. Several reporters on duty, tried to confirm this news, and succeded.

It was confirmed, the fatherly figure that we know as Bang Ersa died during a crossfire, between GAM and the army. His body had already been evacuated to the Korem Hospital in Lhokseumawe that afternoon, according to a source.

Soon after, one of the Division Head, Atmaji sumarkijo, entered the newsroom and broke the news to everybody in the room.“After the crossfire, two bodies were found. One was a GAM soldier, and the other was a civilian. The army had confirmed that the civilian was identified as Ersa Siregar.”

The clatter of keyboards, the chatter of Editors, Producers and Reporters, trying to make the news for the Afternoon Program died out. But, as it quickly went silent, several reporters got working immediately. Jos ran to the library to get some visuals of Ersa, for the Afternoon News.

Vida, the Weekend News Producer, searched her files endlessly for the last package Ersa had done, before his captive. Edwin arrived, just after five, to help the producers with ersa story because he was one of the few that knew Ersa, during his last days covering the conflict in Aceh.

It was Headline news on Metro TV that went on air first with the news. The phone started ringing, from other medias asking for confirmation.SCTV followed, and then RCTI.Aman Wicaksono tried to hold back tears, during the newscast. So did Devi Triana. The recorded visuals and voice of Bang Ersa was heard over the air. It was his “ON CAM” during a cross fire, in his first week of his last assignment in Aceh, on July 2003.

Yulia, an off-duty Producer, arrived in the office, around 7.30 pm, shortly after cancelling her date, to help out with the plan to make a special program on Ersa, to be aired on the same night. An ‘aspiring reporter’, felt completely helpless, because the one person that aspire him to become a journalist, had past away.
